awc’ commitment to sustainability

helping the online world stay a little greener

Even though we work online, there is still an environmental impact of our business activity.

We are absolutely and completely committed to doing all in our power to off-set all that ugly carbon that’s emitted from the data centres that keep all my writing and copywriting digital and the machines that keep the internet alive.

If you hadn’t noticed yet, we only work with other businesses who care about the planet too:

whether that’s overtly through eco-products, businesses who are improving using their services to do good and increase awareness, or companies who have a mindful company culture.

The whole point of Alice Writes Copy is to help y’all (i.e. the entrepreneurs, the one-man/woman-band businesses, 5-9ers) improve your website so that it works harder for you.

That means you can spend less time at a screen and more time enjoying the flippin brilliant world we live in. For me, that’s getting in the sea.

And without taking responsibility for my environmental impact, it’s a very sad thought to think the sea might not be there to enjoy for future gens.

The heroes at Under2Degrees carried out a carbon footprint for me (which you can read here). Reviewing my energy consumption, looks like I’m using less than the average working-from-home-er (phew), but there’s always more we can do, eh.

So through my business strategy, operations and every-day office life, here’s what AWC is doing to improve the sustainability of my biz life.

Aiming for zero waste.

We endeavour to waste absolutely zilch in the office.

  • All paper is all reused and then recycled.

  • We don’t use a printer on-site, so there’s no cartridges ending up in landfill.

  • All food packaging is recycled and we take regular trips to a soft-plastic recycling pick-up point.

  • Even my coffee bags from Origin Roasters can be returned to them for recycling.

  • All packaging and padding for client presents is reused from previous bits I’ve received in the post.

  • My business cards are made from off-cuts from a t-shirt factory.

Reducing energy needs.

  • Lights and electrical equipment will be switched off when not in use.

  • Heating will be adjusted with energy consumption in mind.

  • We have changed our energy supplier to Bulb, who use renewables.

  • Almost all meetings are taken online, so there’s no need to travel anywhere unnecessarily.

  • All my clients receive certification that trees have been planted on their behalf to off-set the carbon emitted during our online work together. (Thanks MoreTrees!)

Supporting others to do the same.

Spreading awareness to other business owners can help us collectively make a bigger impact. There’s power in numbers.

  • Any subcontractors, outsourced advisors and experts I directly work with have to read this before we work together.

  • As part of the MindfulCommerce community, I am also able to reach and promote more self-aware product- and service-businesses, to change industry standards towards being more environmentally responsible.

The kinda gross bits.

Like cleaning.

  • Cleaning materials used will be as environmentally friendly as possible, like using EcoVer and using plastic-free options from The Good Lyfe in Newquay.

  • Materials used in office refurbishment will either be environmentally friendly, repurposed or second hand.

  • We’ll only use licensed and appropriate organisations to dispose of waste.

So can I buy you some trees?

If we’re embarking on a website design or copywriting project together, I’ll buy some trees in your name, so we can do our little bit to help restore the planet.

If you’re a business what cares about the impact of what you’re doing — whether it’s all online or you’re making real, tangible products — I think we’ll probably get on (especially if you’re keen on the old Vitamin D up-keep).
